Transcend
Considered to have kick-started the craft coffee scene in Edmonton, Transcend are a fair-trade coffee roasters who have 2 cool cafes in the city. The coolest of the 2 (according to this writer) can be found in 109 Street, where Transcend have taken over the historic Garneau Theatre. Underneath the distinctive 1940s signage you’ll find a cosy café serving big mugs of coffee and freshly baked pastries.

Block 1912
In funky Old Strathcona, the best place to grab a brew in-between browsing all the independent boutiques is Block 1912. With walls lined with second-hand books and an incredibly tempting cabinet of tarts, desserts and gelato, Block 1912 is the kind of place you’ll want to spend hours in. Luckily, their extended opening hours means you contentedly can.

District
With its soaring windows and minimal furnishings, District Café and Bakery wouldn’t look out of place in Copenhagen. Aside from its elegant interior design, District are renowned for their barista coffee and generously sized baked goods. (You must check out their cinnamon buns!) District proudly source their produce from Alberta’s best farmers and as a result the menu is filled with hearty, colourful dishes.

Lock Stock Coffee
One of the best places to get barista coffee in Downtown YEG is at Lock Stock Coffee’s dark-hued den. In complete contrast to the previous café on this list, Lock Stock features exposed brick and dark woods that are typically reserved for places that serve something a little harder than a shot of coffee. The Gibraltar, a double shot of espresso with steamed milk served in a short tumbler, certainly has a kick to it!

Farrow
Farrow focus on just 2 things and does those 2 things rather well. On their rotating menu you’ll find just sandwiches and coffee – what more could your working day need? The sandwich menu features tempting combinations involving the likes of pastrami, roast beef and roasted beets (not all at once!) while the coffee menu rotates through a hand-picked selection of local, national and international beans. The original Farrow premises are an unassuming shop on 109st while their newest premises are an eye-catching building in Ritchie.
