Must Do: Ride the Quebec-Levis Ferry

Quebec City should be appreciated from every angle possible, which means you should probably make time to ride the Quebec-Levis ferry.

Used by both Quebec City and Levis locals, the Quebec-Levis ferry is a local commuter ferry which crosses the Saint-Lawrence River on a daily basis. It is also one of the top attractions in Quebec City.

Boarding the ferry, we highly recommend heading to the outdoor deck, finding a seat and enjoying the fresh air as you travel across the Saint-Lawrence River – a journey which will take about 12-15 minutes. As you reach the Levis side of the river, disembark and explore this charming city (this walking tour in Levis is highly recommended), or disembark and embark the ferry once more for the trip back to Quebec City.

While we love Levis, Quebec, the return trip to Quebec City is spectacular.

FERRY TIPS

Enjoy a picnic on the Quebec-Levis ferry

Quebec City is beautiful any time of year but in our opinion, summer and autumn are best. As the ride is 12-15 minutes each way, consider the following.

• Once you arrive in Levis you’ll need to leave the ferry, but don’t worry, you can just walk back on!

• Take time to explore Levis. Visit a cafe, have lunch or go on a walking tour.

• Add a little romance and bring along a small bottle of wine or champagne and a couple of eco-friendly glasses (we love these ones).

Pack a wee ferry picnic! Bring a croissant, some cheese, fruit and something sweet.

• A camera is a must! Make sure your battery is charged.

In autumn, brace yourself for stunning views of Quebec City surrounded by gold, rust orange and ruby red trees.

• Chilly day/evening? Dress warm and bring a travel size blanket to help stay warm on deck (we love this one!).

Consider riding the ferry at night. We love the way Quebec City’s skyline sparkles at night.

MINI TRAVEL PLANNER

Planning to visit Québec City? Here are some interesting reads, recommendations, and tips to help you plan your Québec City vacation.

  • Lock in your accommodations before they disappear (summer can get busy, yo!): Budget travellers will find several hostels on Hostelworld, but our favourites can be found in this post. Booking.com is a great place for Mid-Range – Luxury travellers to find Québec City hotels.
  • Asking locals and travel experts for advice is a great way to discover things you won’t find in a guidebook: We highly recommend checking out the Travel in Canada Facebook group.
  • Speaking of guidebooks: Here is a couple to consider for general planning and inspiration: Lonely Planet Montreal & Quebec City guidebook, the Lonely Planet Canada guidebook is also quite useful. If you’re not an LP fan (excuse us as we pick our jaw up off the floor), then Rough Guides Canada and Michelin Green Guide Canada are also good.
  • Thinking of doing a day trip, walking tour, or food tour?: Visit sites like Viator for a wide selection of tours available in Québec City.
  • Getting around Québec City: Check out our transportation page for Québec City here for information on everything from parking to public transportation and more.
